Came out of a small shell pond in my backyard- I used to have goldfish, now I just use it to garden, pitcher plants, acorus, Japanese iris, so I let the muck build up in the bottom, every spring when I clean it out there are surprises, like this guy.
It eats blackworms mostly...
Just a cute little abnormality. There are different species of spotted newts (Notopthalmus species), but this one looks like your ordinary spotted, N. viridescens. It's just got abnormal coloring. Nice find.
hey,
the spotted newt comes in 4 different regional forms. heres an article for you and will explain alot about what you seek.

Like what kaysie said there are several species of red-spotted newts. Some have alot of spots, some almost none and one species the red spots fuse to make stripes. The body color is typical spotted newt color. I'm getting 2.2 tomorrow. I've been looking for these for over 10 yrs when I got my first one. You got 'em in your backyard, LUCKY! LOL
