What does a mite look like?

I have been keeping reptiles for several years and I am still not sure what a mite looks like.
I keep panther chams and sometimes you get fungus gnats which are tiny walking slightly elongated little bugs. They tend to be under potted plants or under water bowls and are easy to kill.
How can I be sure what i am seeing every so often is not a reptile mite. Are reptile mites elongated in shape? Someone told me they are very round. Can someone post a site where I can see a picture of one?

I had a ball with mites a long time ago. They look like little dots that are about twice the size of a period in this sentence. I found them in the bottom of a bowl when I soaked my snake. They often hid between scales or along the heat pits and are a huge pain to eliminate. At the time, the reptile store had me lightly dust the bottom of the enclosure with standard dog and cat flea powder, but I'm guessing that Provent A Mite (sp?) and other specialty products are now used.

Hope this helps!

fungas gnats look like elongated dots that move. I want to be able to tell them apart.

I don't think that's what I have. i have little tiny grey things that are a bit thinner and longer in all the damp places like under plants in the chameleon cages and in the damp spagnum moss I use for corn snake egg laying.
Anyone know what they are? Do snake mites hang out in the damp areas? I never see these on the animals mostly in the dirt and plants.
