New Girl needs advise- Hi Pheve

FEENIEE May 13, 2005 11:59 AM

Hi every, I'm going to be getting a Giant Day Gecko this summer and am working on the set up.
Here is what I have as far as a set up goes:

Cage-30 gallon aquarium tank with screen lid for proper ventilation, and a mini Habba Mist misting machine to keep the humidity right.
Subtrate-small pebbles mixed with peat moss and Orchid bark for the top layer subrate (it holds the humidity better)
Plants- I will use pothos, a small ficus for climbing and a few bamboos.
decorations- I have a reptile hut and some cork bark that I will
stratigicly place so that it provides a good hiding spot. Lighting- I have 30inch Repti-GLo 5.0 fluorescent light that I will be using for UVB/UVA I will also use a 40 watt basking bulb.
Food and supplements- I will feed baby food (I heard they like peach) Crickets, gut loaded with food from Cricketfood.com(excellent product), they also get organic carrots, beets, mustard leaves, oranges and brussel sprouts to help feed and hydrate them(the crickets that is). As a treat I will also offer, king worms, silkworms and horn worms. To supplement his diet, I will use Gecko dust on his
crickets which is a phosphorus free, calcium and vitamin supplement once a week.****Unless he is recieving it more or less often. I would like to be able to get this info from the owner, as it will be very important in acclimating him to his new home, food, ect... Am I missing anything??

Can you guys post some pics of your set ups? I would like to see how everyone has there's set up.
Thanks in advance!!

Okay I'm on the run here, but your sounding great so far on everything, seems you have done your gecko homework,

They are beautiful geckos, I am guardian to a lovely chubby girl name Kayean(like the pepper) got her 2 years ago from a young buddy who went of to college.

I don't think shes getting her back, LOL (I have grown quite fond of her)

Anyway kido, what ya should do is also check out the Day Gecko Forum, sometimes slow, but good people.

Keep us updated when ya get your new pretty friend. Be fun to have another buddy to talk with about them,

Thanks for the link, didn't even check for sub forums! I'm excited about my new addition! Can't wait! I've wanted one for some time, but was didn't know what kind, then I saw the the Day Gecko's and read up on them and they were very similar in care to chameleons, so I thought what the heck! My next project (next year) will be a satanic leaf tail gecko!! Those guys are soooo cool!!

The only thing I think may be important to add to what you already have is another fluorescent bulb. Not a high UVB bulb but rather a bulb that produces a lot more visible light.

Thanks for the info! What brand and wattage do you use and how far from the lid do you put it?

If the lamp is on the screen then I use 30 watts but if they are suspended above the tank it can use either 60w or 75w bulbs but that all depends on the distance and room temperature. It usually comes down to a matter if inches. The problem with having the lamp on the screen is that it sometimes still needs to be dimmed by using a rheostat.
