We live near a creek and have seen a dark gray snake, 24"-30" long. No markings. Its head doesn't extend into a triangle. We live near Dallas. I've looked at photos on the internet and haven't been able to find it. Any ideas? Thanks!

Sounds like a young racer.

I would suggest an adult Yellow-bellied Watersnake. They are dark greenish gray. Click the Caresheets/FAQs/Features link at the top of any Kingsnake.com page and find Terry Hibbits' page on Herps of the DFW area.

Thank you. I think it is a yellow bellied water snake. I just got a better look at it (it lives in an old gutter under the deck and it was sticking its head out). I've told the kids never to pick up a snake so am glad to know it's not venomous.
