Can you artificially inseminate BPs?

ginevive May 13, 2005 12:48 PM

I was wondering if this could possibly be done, or if it ever were done. Could you remove the sperm plug from a male BP and fertilize a female in another location?
I am thinking that this could make breeding loans much easier, if it were possible. Or perhaps it could be possible to mail semen to other locations, the way they do with horses.

Interesting thoughts, but I don't know how it would work. Sperm plugs are dryed and hard and surley contain no viable sperm. I can't imagine any way to extract viable sperm in a quantity that would allow for insemination. A second problem would be how to preserve and ship it...I mean most folks don't have the ability to freeze in liquid nitrogen. A third problem would be that females seem to need contact with males for the reproductive cycle to kick into gear. Without that contact with an actual male snake, females probably wouldn't become gravid even if inseminated...after having thought about it, I don't think its doable...

It can be done...Fred Kick of Reptile Addicts has been doing it for a few years now, I have never watched him do it, so I don't know how, but he has great success with it....at this time I do not think it can be shipped!!....... Jason
