Most paints take about 72 hours to cure, with the fumes being worst up to 24 hours. If painting an entire room where the animals are, remove the animals for at least 24 hours or even more if the ventilation is minimal. The warnings on the paint can says the fumes are toxic. Although I'm sure some exposure is fine, avoiding the first 24 hours is best practice.
We had the downstairs of our house painted (interior). The snakes are upstairs. I just closed the door to their room and had the window open some. They did fine. When it came time to paint the upstairs, I did it myself in small increments to avoid lots of fumes lingering, and I didn't remove the snakes. They are still alive, and I would bet none worse for the wear, but again, the fumes were minimal due to painting small sections at a time. The wife was angry at me, but the snakes are OK.
