regular bulbs vs. "reptile bulbs"

Rydair May 13, 2005 03:01 PM

Just wondering if it is recomended one uses bulbs made for reptiles that you can buy at pet stores or regular bulbs of the same wattage. Does it really matter in terms of basking spots?

As far as I've read, noone on here that has at least some experiance with monitors uses those reptile bulbs, they all use halogen Floodlights in rows or whatever. You can buy them in bulk and they don't cost as much as the pet store bulbs. As long as it provides heat, i don't see a problem.

They are the cheapest piece of crap bulbs made in bulk for those companies to put their own packaging around them, then sell them to you at a huge profit. They are all junk, they dont last very long, they dont do anything useful to a reptile that a normal household bulb doesnt already do, they create a lousey basking temperature, high air temps, use way too much wattage, melt their own bases and assemblies for these reasons, and they cost about 2-10 times what a regular household flood bulb does.
If you use a low watt halgen outdoor "flood" bulb" (not a spot) you get a good temp gradient, high basking temps, a durable longer lasting bulb, and pay a lot less.
