Feeding and acclimation questions

bruce_y May 13, 2005 04:16 PM

This is probably a dumb one, but I haven't seen any good answers re feeding and acclimation for a new baby CH. Some questions:

1. Should you immediately start feeding outside of its cage (say, in a paper bag or something), or should you feed it within its cage and change the process to separate feeding and housing enclosures later? Minimal handling during the first few weeks seems to make better sense to me, but who knows.

2. Should I try starting with f/t right off the bat, or should I go with live for a few months?

3. How soon should I start handling/taming him? Wait a month or two?

(Maybe these questions don't matter at all, in which case the answer may be, "Hey Mr. Hyper Guy, lighten up...he'll be fine with whatever."

Thanks!
Bruce

PS. Thanks to everyone for answering my other posts. Hopefully my Qs help other newbies as well. Oh, I may have a YB question, so Amir, if you happen to see this, I'll paypal you your stinking dollar. lol

----I would feed inside the cage all the time. Being a good idea to feed outside the cage is a myth! And yes keeping handling to a minimum for the first couple weeks would be a good idea.

2. Should I try starting with f/t right off the bat, or should I go with live for a few months?

----If it was me I would do live for the first few feedings just to get it feeding ok. Then switch to f/t only if you really want to. Feeding live is ok only if you don't leave it in unattended, thats a different topic though.

3. How soon should I start handling/taming him? Wait a month or two?

----I would wait until he has eaten at least 2-3 times and then you can handle him. Just make sure he is a good feeder before doing to much handling!
