Striped Crayfish question. . .

Pondoris May 13, 2005 07:46 PM

While going to a jobsite today, I spotted a small snake on the side of the road. I stopped and waited for a car to pass, so I could do a u-turn. As I did this I watched the car run over the snake(ignorant ppl). It was my first striped crayfish snake. Anyways I've found a few Red Belly Mud snakes in the area, and was wondering how common are the striped crayfish in central Florida?

Apparently they are fairly common in some areas. Just not seen too often. I work very near a population of them but have yet to find a live one there. After the warm summer rains is when I see the most numbers. It's too bad because I really want a good pic of one for my albums. I feel that I will eventually get to photo a live one this year..as long as the idiots don't run over every last one.
Where in FL are you?? I'm in Tampa.

Thanks for the reply. . .pretty much what I figured. I live in the Daytona area. . .I found the snake in Flager county. A friend of mine and I do alot of herping through out Florida and the Georgia border not much in the panhandle. Well mostly we do alot of searching and map marking. Its been pretty slow for us so far this year. Alot of our decent spots are being developed or destroyed by ignorant "herpers" that dont know how to replace cover.
