handling young beardies

gd929 May 13, 2005 07:58 PM

I have a 4 week old bearded dragon and i was wondering what the best way to handle them because it seems everytime i reach in the cage from the side he seems to run off extremely fast. I dont wanna injure him but i do want him to get used to human touch. Thanks for all the advice that is posted on the forum also.

If at all possible try NOT to reach DOWN ontop of him. He will get scared.. try approching him from a level position

I agree. Darwin is now quite comfortable with being handled and picked up but sometimes I reach for him from above and he gets feaked for a second and will even gape - so I just stroke his head.

He was very skittish in the beginning but I took him out anyway for about 10 minutes 2x/day. I increased the time and he will now hang out on my shoulder or chest while I am working. Sometimes he sits on my hand while I move the mouse around! pretty funny - I guess it is his idea of an amusement ride!

Once you get him out, gently stroke his head - calms hims every time

I always pet mine on the back to the tail for a little while before picking up, that way they definately know I'm there and don't get startled...
