Niles get bigger, and are typically meaner or more agressive. Savannahs are smaller sure, but by no means small. I am pretty sure 3-4 feet is around average for full grown size with prime husbandry. If you are a first time monitor owner, I would not go w/ a sav or a nile. I made the mistake of starting w/ a sav. If you are sure you really and truly want a monitor, a lot of people start out w/ ackies, more expensive, but a better starter choice.
Once you build the proper home, stock up on mice, roaches and cricket and get the reccomended wildcaught vet check. the ackie is cheaper by far.
With ackies, the food bill is smaller, the cage is smaller which equals smaller light bills. They are all captive bred so a vet visit might not be nessasary, although I reccomend all new critters should be checked over by a qualified vet.
