Yes, i think theres tanks too big for a hatchling to start out in. they may get over welmed by the space and may not be able to find there food.

Ok . . . I hadn't thought about it that way. I was thinking that in the wild they have large bodies of water that they are born into so why would a captive situation be different . . .
this is an old post but i havent liked the whole internet thing for long and i am just starting to search through the info on here and i have a reasonably explanation for this question. in the wild some species thier mothers do infact fend for the young, they feel more comfortable around there mother, and in a large enclosure all by there selfs they dont feel safe. it is better to have a hatcling in a smaller cage for security reasons, as in the animal feels more secure in a smaller enclosure wich will in the end help on reducing stress. also the food issue, it will be easier for them to catch there food in the smaller one but i dont think it makes much difference seeing how crocodilians are some of the smartest hunters out there. i think the 6 foot would be fine to start him off in though, its not to big, and just provide many hides for him so he feels safe from other predators, wich i know there isnt any but he dont
