How do you find a good vet?

gpmonaghan Jul 12, 2003 12:08 AM

I really appreciate the abundance of good information on this site. I was looking for some advice on how to locate a vet who really knows what he's doing. If you look at some of my earlier posts it sounds like the one I went to wasn't real experienced with reptiles. I had gone to a small family owned pet store where I know the lady breeds her own leos and the manager sent me to this guy. As I mentioned earlier he kept going on that leos don't do well in captivity, but I had a sense that that was an out becuase he didn't seem to have a whole lot to offer. He gave him parasite meds and said to force feed him baby food (meat based)and get him out in some natural sunlight....that doesn't make sense for a nocturnel creature or am I off base? Anyway want to know how to go about finding a proper vet. We're very concerned about our poor suffering little critter.

I just started calling around to different animal hospitals in my area, and if they have a vet that specializes in birds or other exotics normally that includes reptiles too. We actually have two seperate vets for my pets, a vet for my cat and dog, and then another vet for my three birds and my two leos.

If you go to the "LINKS" page on my website, I have 4 resources that can help you find a qualified Herp Vet in your area.

Call them and ask the reptile department which vet they use.
