Just got a collard! =) (PICS)

Melle May 14, 2005 05:02 PM

Hey everyone,

New to collard lizards here, I just got my first one at a show today He is an eastern collard lizard. The funny thing is, I have only been keeping reptiles for about 5 years now, and I have quite a few different kinds, but the very first lizard I ever wanted to keep as a pet and got attached to was a collard lizard. But, until now I never got one. So here he is! He's pretty teeny, so alert and active too! And I cant believe how docile these guys are even at this small, he is just so inquisitive and seems to want to know everything thats goin on.

He already ate 6 freshly molted mealworms for me today, chowed em right down. How safe would it be if i fed him normal ones though, with their shells? I know some lizards don't have as tough of digestive juices as others and mealworms can potentially cause impaction, but what about collards? And is the same about waxworms true for these guys, feed em very few because of how fattening they are? I plan to feed him mainly crickets but i always have a supply of mealies for my geckos so i figured i would ask.

And, I see this forum LOVES pics, so here he is

I guess that would be a piece of my hair in the tank that i gotta take out of there, heh.

Thanks for looking!

welcome! what a good looking baby. collareds are very sweet. and lol about the hair, my hair goes almost to my butt so it is everywhere too, has a mind of its own. i don't really feed mealies, some of mine tend to throw them up. i mostly feed gut loaded crickets and the occasional wax worm

Sure is a pretty lil juvey you have, looks bright eyed and scaley tailed LOL

Keep posting the pics, your right we love them here. I don't know what it is but I too have hair to my butt, geesh all 3 of us (hairy ladies)

My lizards use it as climbing vines, ehehheheeh,

Anyway glad to have ya here with us, GREAT bunch here, always willing to talk lizards

I feed mine superworms, they love them. Some throw them up but only if they eat them fast of too many.

Supers are more digestable than mealies. Mealies have more chitin (harder shelled).

Oh what did you name your new lil friend?

Lots of lizard kids

hehe, yes, very very hairy lol. Yours use your hair as climbing vines too, huh? Good, I'm not the only one

My little dude is too small for supers right now, which is why i gave him a few mealies. And I did pick out the freshly molted ones with no shell just in case.

I dunno what to name him yet, still workin on that. I will let ya all know though, and post more pics of him too of course!
