Why isn't my Savanah moving????

zombielove May 14, 2005 05:14 PM

I just got a baby Savanah Monitor today. I'm really excited. I will post pictures of it later.

Here is my question. My Savanah who I have named Sultan is either very docile, or playing dead.

Do baby Savanah's play dead?? I know it's alive, but it's not moving much.

Thanks!!

As much as it is a pain - leave your new sav alone. For a while. Make sure it has a hide where it can feel secure (they like small spaces and like to dig) and has easy access to heat and water. Multiple hides are never bad. Leave your new guy alone for a while. It's probably very stressed from the move and watching it constantly won't help. Our sav hid for ages when we first got her - she's still shy sometimes. Give your sav time to adjust to it's new surroundings - change the water and clean the cage (and feed) but that's about it for a while IMO. Good luck - I'm sure others will chime in soon.

is that it's very close to death. It was only necessary that it stay alive long enough to part a fool from their money.

i'm very close with the store owner. i don't think he'd do that to me. i'm one of his favorite and most frequent customers. in the past he helped me nurse a baby vield cham with bone disease back to health free of charge.

Double check heat, 70ish cold side of cage 130 under the heat source, make sure water is there and the cage can keep in some of the humidity. Spray inside the cage with a water bottle "mist", a couple times a day.

Cham. are a lot weaker then monitors and tougher to get going, especialy after their sick, if you can revive a cham, this monitor should not be too difficult. Post a pic so more details on it can be seen.

like most of the imported Savannahs, i would guess it has been kept poorly for quite some time now, and it is on its last legs. if you were an experienced keeper, you would have known to post details about your setup and cage, so i would also assume that it continues to be kept poorly.

you have a small window of time to fix it, and make things "better", but you need to act fast. check out the link below, and then get to work. if you want specific feedback, you need to post details about setup, temps, diet, etc.

but start with getting things corrected first, don't waste time typing and talking.

order Dan Bennett's Savannah Monitor book, you can find it at our site. stay away from any other book about "Savannah Monitors" because they are soooooooo full of bad info.

baby Savannahs should be alert, active, and quite fiery. not mostly dead. you certainly do have a problem on your hands, but not unlike the other tens of thousands of keepers that also just bought baby Savs without any idea of how to keep them alive.

best of luck.
