Non poisonous snake in Tallahassee, Florida

jayess May 14, 2005 06:00 PM

This snake was sunning itself in open area near a fence line. Not aggressive, picked it up and it seemed quite calm. Laid it back down on the ground to get some pictures. Not poisonous and a definite pattern on its back. Probably around 3 feet long if I had to guess.

There are many different kinds of Garter snakes. Do you know what kind specifically?

Yup, it's an adult Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis s. sirtalis). It's of the checkerboard variety. They also come in black with yellow, orange, or white stripes. It's not uncommon to find all of the varieties in the same population.
