torn skin on RETF

apep May 15, 2005 01:58 AM

Tonight while I was cleaning my RETF enclosure my son reached in to pet the red-eyed and his hands where dry so when he pet the frog some of the skin on it's back tore. Is there any way to treat this can I use Triple A ointment or neosporin? Are either of theese safe to use on frogs? I put the skin back in place as well as I could, but I'm afraid of infections. PLease help me out if you can....
Thank You
Apep

I have used neosporin on small superficial wounds and it seems to help. I use just a small dab because i've read that too much can be harmful. Just my opinion, but if the cut is small and the frog is healthy otherwise, I would see if the cut begins to heal on its own. If not, then try the neosporin. For now, I would put him in a clean sterile enclosure while he heals, in the meantime. Paper towel substrate, water dish, and a few things to climb on. Thats it. You want to have him in an enviornment where you can easily monitor him and easliy clean the enclosure. You also dont want him near any of his tank mates, (if he has any) in case it does become infectious. Good Luck

There must be something else going on here. Regardless of how dry your hand is you cannot tear a retf's skin by picking it up. You could probably not tear it with both hands and a lot of effort. Perhaps your frogs has an underlying problem. Hank
