A Tip For Those Building Cages For Boids

Chameleon2005 May 15, 2005 07:32 AM

I thought i`d share an Idea of mine with you lot.

When I was building my cage, my biggest concern was venting.

By this, I mean putting in adequate vents but without jeopordising the security of the cage.
I originally thought of mesh(similair to flex-ariums), but as Zeus (my Burm) grows he could quite easily force his way through that. The next thing I thought of was chicken wire, but again I was concerned about the possibility of him damaging his snout on that.

So by accident, I came up with a piece of genius.

The tank is overall 33" tall. The main panel of wood at the back is 24" tall. The gap that was left was to be for the mesh as originally planned. As I said by accident i placed a 6" tall peice of wood along the back, and then the light bulb in my head flickered. I temporarily screwed the new peice of wood into place and voila, this would leave 1.5" of vents on either side of the 6" panel. Problemo solved.

I put in the upright support because I was originally planning to put another cage on top of this one and again by accident this added to the security of the vents.

Anyway heres a pic, if i haven`t made any sense

P.S. I also screwed a peice of cork bark onto the back of the cage, to help him start shedding against.

I am building my cage soon....For ventialtion I thoguht it would be acceptable to drill a bunch of 2" in diameter holes on each of the sides. Do you think that is enough ventilation?

Two inch holes are kind of big. Unless you use some kind of grate.
Try a website called I believe, Custom Cages.
They sell the vents there., Otherwise just use soffit vents from Home Depot.
Another note...too much venting, and you will never reach 60-70% humidity.

I also considered the idea of drilling holes, just make sure if you do, to seal around the inner side of the holes, to stop the wood absorbing any mosture and warping/expanding. Don`t go nuts with the amount of holes though, its a tricky balance getting good airflow without comprimising humidity!!
