Hi,
Nice post. I have a night snake, and agree that they make great pets. Mine accepted dead rosies the day after I got it. instantly, I was able to scent pinkies with rosies, and he took those as well. I got mine from Regal Reptiles, and the list had your choice of baby night snake, juvenille night snake, or adult night snake, all for the same price of $45.
I remembered seeing one in a book once, and I knew that not too many people keep them, so I ordered a baby. It is about 8 inches now. Mine is very, very gentle, but there is something odd about him. As with most of the rear-fanged snakes I have held, excluding hognoses, he just hangs there like a lifeless length of rope whenever I pick him up. I have had him for several months, and he is growing, and eating. He moves around, and flicks his tongue out, but he feels very delicate, almost like a rough green snake.
I will be selling and trading at a reptile show this summer, and hope to encounter some more night snakes there. The setup is very easy. I have heard that these guys are more venomous than a hognose, and I have seen pictures of Western hognose bites. Some peoples hands swelled up like an inflated rubber glove.
Probably not a good species to take any chances with...
Although I highly doubt that a bite could ever result in death. I did hear of a night snake that once bit a small dog, and the dog died shortly afterward. There are lots of questions that need to be answered... How long are yours?
