My outside enclosure

Cdp75 May 15, 2005 11:31 AM

This is my temporary outside home for Stoli. We're planning on selling our house soon and didn't want to make a big place for her. Plus, she's still very small. Heck, it's even hard to find her in the kiddie pool. I've got it filled with dirt and the bottom has many small holes drilled for drainage when it rains. It's planted with flowers, greens, weeds, and grass in spots that I read was edible.
Right now she only stays in it during the day b/c I haven't made her a little house yet. I'm hoping to get that done today so she can stay out there and have some place to get out of the rain.

It has a wall inside to prevent her from getting out and chicken wire that's double up around the sides. I'm still working on the top to keep the birds and squirrels out...that's the only thing that can get to her.
I think it turned out quite nicely! She must approve b/c she's one happy little tort!!

Here's the happy little tortoise. She's all over her yard, munching here, munching there.

I really like this enclosure. Is that a sulcata that you have in there? I have 2 Leopard Tortoises and absolutely LOVE them!! My husband and I are building an outdoor enclosure in a few weeks. I will post pics!!

Thanks glad you like it! I have a russian. We used the smallest size kiddie pool at wal-mart. At first we thought it was too little until we put her in it but it's perfect. She's got tons of room to roam around. He got her a little house built today. The whole time the hubby was saying she wasn't going to use it. As soon as we put it in there she walked right in. It's so cute to be made from stuff laying around here!! I think I might paint it.

She's spending her 1st night outside. As it was getting dark, I went to check on her and there she was going in her house. Looks like she approves of her torty house!

We almost didn't put a lid on b/c the location in my little side yard. The only thing that every gets in there are birds and my squirrels. Well, the only squirrels that are regulars, are the ones I bottle raised and released. I could see them thinking "oh look at that huge weird looking nut" and carrying her off....hahaha. So, the hubby put a peice of chicken wire on top and molded it around the sides. It's not very sturdy but there's no way my squirrels can get in.

As for cost. The kiddie pool was about $6. The chicken wire was $15 for a 20' roll. I already had the dirt and the rock landscape edging....I think when I got them they were around $2-$4 a peice.

I'm new to the forum, but have had 2 turtles as pets since 1989. Gretta is a Bell's hinged back and Hobbs is an eastern ornate box. I have wanted to build an outdoor enclosure of some type for a long time, but Hobbs has proven to be a repeat escape artist. I think that this type of enclosure might be just the right thing for her during the day when I'm out gardening. Thanks
