PRAIRIE RINGNECK question

TwoSnakes May 15, 2005 03:53 PM

I saw a few Prairie ringnecks (Diadophis punctatus arnyi) at area pet store and imagine care for them like other ringnecks, thinking of getting all 3 would this be a mistake to house 3 in same tank?
Are these lizard eaters or would earthworms, rosy reds(tiny ones) be okay?
If type of ringneck that needs lizards, salamanders or treefrogs would like to know before purchase.

Hi:

Care for prarie ringnecks is very similar to Southern ringnecks, but with a slightly drier substrate, from the information that I could obtain. They will take small earthworms, and guppies, although in the wild, these little Diadophis usually take lizards, such as skinks, and small treefrogs, like the Southern ringnecks.
That is exciting that they are available at pet stores. I always wanted a prarie ringneck. It's funny that you posted this. I was thinking about their ventral pattern just today.

Funny thing is they used to sell them as cheap feeder snakes. Well not just prairie ringnecks but other types(not regals) for like $2 each.
Than people began to buy them as pets and the store got wise to that and price went up to $10 but that keeps them alive so thats good. they dont carry them during the winter but now they carry ringnecks from May to Sept here and there.
Same with ground skinks they used to carry them for $1 each than same thing upto $6 each.

Ringneck snakes are still available for sale at those cheap prices. Southern ringnecks and prairie ringnecks are available 3/4 of the time at wholesalers down in FL. Dan on these forums buys them for like $2 each to feed his coral snakes lol.

Prairie ringneck snakes can be housed just like every other ringneck snake sub-species, don't let the word prairie throw you off, they are often find in moist areas. Food wise, their main 2 prey items are earthworms and salamanders. I have to disagree with one thing Dave said, fish of any type have not been reported to be consumed either in the wild, or under captive conditions by the prairie ringneck snake. Keeping all 3 together will be fine, they are snake eaters, but only on occasion.

Do you think earthworms would be a good staple food for them? Salamanders in my area arent easy to find tho around you really have to search hard since they sprayed 4 years ago that "safe" poison that kills mosquitos.
They used to be easy to find no problem at all but after they sprayed two consecutive years the ponds, etc your lucky if you find one amphibian the whole summer.

Most prairie ringnecks will take worms over salamanders.
