Chino Hills State Park

VTECsqznN2O May 15, 2005 05:39 PM

Went to chino hills state park today..and came across these two guys...couple southern pacifics..I was hoping to find some rubers but I didnt have any luck

found this first one in a rainwater runnoff..took the first two pics there..and he started to leave for the third pic..so we left him alone..we came back about 30-45 minutes later to find him about a foot from the original spot and I got the 4th and 5th pics..he is a newborn...definately this season..about 12 inches or so

great shot with his tongue out

This one I found jsut after the one above..walked by some bushes and didnt see anything..so i turned around to come back..and he had come out onto the trail..Almost stepped on him...I will always be amazed at how different the amrkings can be when they are so close together.. approximately 1/8th of a mile.. He never rattled..even when I hooked him..but once he got into some cover..he went crazy and rattled up a storm..even when we left him alone and were mroe then 50 feet away he was still goin. I'm guessing about three years old by his size and girth..he was about 36 inches

Kevin:

Nice snakes & pictures. FYI: Chino Hills SP Rattlers are part of several research projects by folks I met at the BIology of Rattlesnakes symposium at Loma Linda University this part January. This is not directly intended for you since I consider you a "pro" but for the general public who would not think twice going in and collecting them all for sale or trade.

Take nothing but pictures leave nothing but footprints and tell no locations.

point well taken.

however I am far from a pro..more of a hobbyist. BUt I levae well enough alone and take only pictures. It was nice to see though that there was a game warden who checked me out and made sure I wasn't capturing anything..and then later I got checked again by another park services police officer for the same thing...Nice that they were keeping an eye out. And they were great to talk to. They kept me abrest of the changing conditions and even gave mesome numbers on who to contact so that I can conduct research within the park and have the proper permits.
