how do you guys keep your tanks chill?....

herpsaremylife May 15, 2005 07:52 PM

ive come into a large catch of rouph-skinned newts near my cousins house and took 2 home. the water they were caught in was extremely deep with deep rocks, about 6 feet at the deepest(fun to catch them) and i beleive they are the aquatic phase. but, the water is fresh melted ice water from the mountains we were hiking between, and about ice-water cold. what do you do to keep the tank chill? and for the enclosure, i should arreat it, keep it all water with underwater hides, like, a rock to climb out on, and what is the food of choice. i know what i can feed them but i wanna know whats the best.

Personally, I use an air conditioner in the summer, like about now, and a fan on high speed at all times during winter. Sounds expensive but it really always keeps the water cool. My newts bred because the water was at such a great temp for them! Water bottles filled with ice can also be useful, and sometimes the newts will climb onto them for a small land area if they feel like it.
