Alligator sinensis breeding size and age and question on aggressive behaviour.

Pedersen,Soe Jul 12, 2003 03:09 AM

Hi
I haven`t been able to find any information on what size and age is necessary for breeding attempts with Alligator sinensis.
My pair is seperated for the moment and will not be introducet to each other before there is a chance of breeding. In China it is possible to keep them together without any problems but here in northern Europe they are very aggressive towards each other.
I have heard that there are similar problems in the zoos in USA that is keeping them, and I would like to get in contact with someone else that has delt with these problems.
Best wishes

Soe,

Try contacting John Brueggen (I may have misspelled his name), the director of the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. You can do so via the park's site online. They have bred a. sinensis there.

This seems to be a fairly common behavior in A.sinensis.
There are several people in the US with great experience in keeping and sometimes breeding A.sinensis. I am sure, John Brueggen will give you any information. If you want to ask other
keepers, please email me: crocodilians@web.de
Will send you a list then.
What about Rene Hedegaards animals? Same behavior?

Hi
I am pleased to say, that I finally got in touch with people that could help me with answers.
It seems that breeding size is between 105 and 120 cm for females.
Aggressive behaviour is obviously a major problem with them and the best way to keep them safe in seperate with short introductions in the breeding season.
Chinese alligators are forbitten to import into USA and no animals are on private hands there (as far as I know)so it is impossible to buy ofsprings.
We had 3 imports to Europe including about 100 animals from 1997 - 2001, but many has been killed or died since then. The actual status of animals on private hands is unknown, but could be as low as 25 animals mainly females.
Best wishes

Soe,

I've been told that there is a breeder, in Louisiana, I believe, of a. sinensis, and that he is the originator of most USA specimens.
