What are the advantages/disadvantages of each stage of development?
If you get anything buy a captive born.Ive purchased adults and right out of the egg.I like both. You can find surplus healthy adults here on kingsnake.Adults are normally sexed correctly also. With an adult you can find out its feed schedule,if it's docile and with good pics if it's healthy.
It doesnt really matter which size you get because if you buy one your going to end up with more anyway.Trust me on that. It's a wonderful sickness we all get here....Paul

Your first snake? or first corn snake?
I am going to assume it is a first.
For this reason I recommend a hatchling.
Yes it can be a little more difficult then an established yearling or sub-adult but you would be missing out on the early development and color changes.
I have snakes I raised from hatchlings and snakes I received as yearlings, sub-adults or adults and the ones I raised from hatchlings tend to be more "special" to me.
It is just more satisfactory to know you brought it all the way up from a baby.
That may sound rather corny (excuse the pun) coming from a 45 year old steel worker but that is just the best way I can describe it.
This is not to say older individuals don't make great pets, they can and do, it is just something I think all corn enthusiasts should experience.
I know I didn't really list drawbacks or advantages but I really don't see any drawbacks except that some hatchlings can take a little effort to get feeding.
If you get an established feeder from a reputable dealer, get you habitat set up properly ahead of time and gather as much information as possible you basically eliminate any drawbacks.
whichever you choose, enjoy
by the way....I would highly recommend "Corn Snakes: The Comprehensive Owner's Guide" by Kathy and Bill Love.
Can't get any better then that.
