NEW BABY - LONG TIME SINCE I'VE HAD ONE

HORSEBREATH May 16, 2005 08:08 AM

I just got a new baby iguana. It's about 6" SVL.
It's been YEARS since I have had one this little.
Just need a refresher course here. I know all about diet, lighting, etc..I've had iguanas for many years (mature/older).

Of course it is very jumpy, "wags" and slaps it's little tail when it get aggrevated with me. He/she opens his mouth, you know the typical defenses. This all starts going away after HOW long?

I handele him every day. I do this a lot while he swims in the bath tub, that way if he decides to leap, there is not a far distance to fall, and he lands in water.

Any "refresher" advise would be appreciated.

Cindy.

Its all association. Right now your new baby associates you with lizard killers and is displaying the appropriate response. Baby Iguanas are very flighty and wary this is what keeps them alive. I personally believe limited handling is the best when they are this young. I believe as they get older using food as the token of peace is the best. Hand feeding is a great way for the Iguana to associatte you with something non threatening such as a bannana. Just be careful sometimes my Ig gets so excited about the prospect of nannas that he will give my finger a nip to see if it is a bannana.
