This time I didn't get the photo

PHRatz May 16, 2005 11:31 AM

In my hunt for Miss Hope I looked over my fence Friday evening & there was a box turtle.
I jumped over as fast as I could, got to it & it was Hobo the male who shows up year after year. The red mulberries have fallen, he was eating them outside the fence.
Yesterday it stormed like crazy, just what I've been waiting for so I can go on a Hope Hunt. But no after the rain stopped we had odd unseasonably cool weather so the rain didn't bring the boxies out.
Heck even the sulcata wouldn't come out in the chilly weather.
Next time I see Hobo though, I'm finding that camera!

Rofl, hey I never realized I never seen a picture of him yet. Wonder how many times you'll see him this year.

You know I think that somewhere in my files I do have a photo of Hobo but I seem to recall that I took that one before we got a digital camera & so it's not a close up shot of him. You can't see him very well so it's not worth posting it. I need to go on a hunt in my files & see if it's there or not.

He seems to be on the property next door a lot where nobody lives but soon someone with kids is moving in. Kids moving in worries me, it's kids who tend to treat box turtles like they're toys & like it's ok to play with them. What to do what to do??
Worry about it when the time comes I guess....

Well, you'll just have to keep him then and get him neutered... far easier to neuter a male than spay a female.

I think it'd be better if you had Hobo than little kids having him, but thats your desicion, perhaps you could talk to the new neighbors about the wildlife there and tell them box turtles dont make good "pets" for children?

Wyvern,
ROFL!!! Yeah easier to neuter a male than spay a female. hee hee
Well I'm not sure how long it's going to be before the new people move in but last time I saw them around here the kids they had with them were little girls & I think that's the only kids they have. As for explaining to kids about the wildlife, maybe I can find it easier to explain to little girls why we want to leave wild turtles alone & not use them for toys. Being little girls hopefully they'll be less interested in the local wild reptiles to begin with. Maybe.. when I was their age I was interested in reptiles so who knows?
If it looks like Hobo is going to wind up in danger.. well... you know I can't allow that to happen. :-x
