Tegu leashing?

garvin90 May 16, 2005 12:23 PM

I finally ordered my tegu and i'd like to know if for when it is older, should i think about getting it a harness for outside trips? right now its still a baby(only 6-7inches) however i know it wont stay that small so is a harness a good idea or can you not harness a reptile? This will be my first monitor type lizard but the one lizard ive been researching for the past 4 years lol.

My Tegu hated his harness when I tried it but other do use them. I would worry more about taming than harnessing at this point.

If you get a harness while it's young you will have better luck training it. Let it wear the harness and walk around the livingroom floor. It will probably roll a bit at first, but once it gets used to it you will be set.

The harness will help when you start taking your tegu outside. A calm tegu inside can still spaz and run the first time you are outside so harness training is a huge plus.

I take my tegus to the park and let them free roam (walk around with no harness or leash) but I would have gotten them trained to this point without harness and clicker training.

Feel free to contact me if you have specific questions.
