PETCO protest in Baltimore Sunday

Katrina Jul 12, 2003 06:22 AM

Permission to cross post was granted by Ms. Griffin. She can also be reached at ChristyG@peta.org

I know a lot of people don't like PETA, but this isn't about PETA, it's about Petco and the fact that they still sell iguanas and wild-caught reptiles.

Katrina

Dear Activist,

We urgently need your help at a local protest in pushing PETCO to stop selling animals. As you may know, PETA recently kicked off a campaign against PETCO based on the countless complaints we've received from PETCO customers and employees on the inhumane treatment of animals at PETCO stores across the country. Employees at PETCO stores are so poorly trained that baby birds have starved to death, other animals have been cannibalized by cage mates as a result of stressful, overcrowded conditions, and managers have ordered employees to throw sick and injured animals into freezers to die.

Please join us from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13 at 8640
Pulaski Hwy. We'll be providing posters and leaflets, so please just bring yourselves, your friends, family, and anyone else you can find. Please e-mail or call me as soon as possible if you can
attend. Just one or two hours out of your day will make such a
tremendous difference in sending the message to PETCO that the
cruelty that it inflicts on animals will not be tolerated. Please check out PETCOCruelty.com to learn more about the campaign. Thank you and we hope to see you there!

For the animals,

Hello,

My name is Brian and I head the SFCRC. I am also a local affliant with the Green Iguana Society. I'd be willing to sign a petition if that would help your cause. There is no way I can go to Baltimore, but i'm with you in spirit.

Sincerely,
Brian

Brian,

Good to hear from you again. I am looking for a sponsor for a bill to ban iguanas and other animals from being prizes at carnivals.

It would be good if you and others in Florida let the state of Virginia know that you are being inundated by unwanted iguanas from the north and this carnival practice needs to be controlled.

Brian,

If you ever see abuse/neglect in a Petco store, please write a letter to the CEO via www.planetfeedback.com You can also write the CEO that way to ask him to stop selling iguanas in the stores - someone sees those letters, because I get replies from regional managers when I write them.

I'll see if there is a petition for you.

Ill agree that petco doesnt take adiquet care of its reptiles for sale but that doesnt mean that all the employes are ill train in fact the petco near me the employees that work with the reptiles know addiquet care and diets not to mention they know the reptiles background..... but this doesnt benifit the reptiles because the employees cant care for the reptiles like the should. a friend of mine was fired from there because he had made positive changes to the enclousers giving the reptiles more room and proper set up and he had made a commplaint about the diets of the animals. the next day he was fired cuz of his actions.

hey thats pretty frekin sad that the birds starve to death!! and selling wild igs thats bad.

Lette Jul 13, 2003 01:04 AM

my youngest iggy came from petco ... it had a broken tail and a leg , wasnt eating or drinking, couldnt move and they were going to kill it (humanily they said so i asked if i could have it and they said no but u can buy it so i did it was only 5 inches in all. i took it to the vet had its brokin limbs splinted and nuritoued it back to health. now its a happy lil guy tame as ever and will climb right on to my hand.... best $30 iv ever invested. and gladly iv had him 2 months and hes grown to 9 inches!!!

Katrina Jul 13, 2003 11:54 AM

I don't think the igs are wild-caught, but the tortoises sure are, and they sell wild-caught cone-headed lizards, which rarely do well in captivity.

the iguanas are farm raised but they sell wc leos, savanna monitors, day geckos, invertabrates, and even sum smaller birds like finches and love birds....

MatNGa Jul 14, 2003 12:06 AM

o seroiusly doubt they sell wild caght leos. i mean lets not get to wacko.

PETA has that covered for all of us

Well that just sucks. PETCO is the only store in town I can get my little crickets and mealworms for my non-PETCO purchased geckos. If you people put PETCO out of business, I'll have to sell my pets because the next closest petstore is 90 miles away and I don't have a car because I walk everywhere I need to go! This bites!

Katrina Jul 15, 2003 06:51 AM

Have you ever tried ordering on-line from some place like Timberline? I'm not trying to put Petco out of business!!!

I just would like them to stop selling iguanas and wild-caught reptiles, that's all. Examples of recent wild-caught animals spotted in Petco: Central American wood turtle, Russian and Greek tortoises, and cone-headed lizards. Since all of the swifts they get once a year arrive gravid, I'm assuming those are wild-caught as well. The ball pythons occasionally arrive with ticks, so those are likely either wild-caught or "farm" hatched African imports, which are not as good as domestic captive bred.

They are TRYING to get them to stop selling reptiles. Not put the store out of buisness. Because their reptiles are wild caught in some cases and they do not recieve proper housing and care while in the stores as a result they are sick and dying.
