In all honesty I have not seen these available at all. I think they would be perfect as captives, but due to their dwindling numbers, I have not seen them available. If anyone happens to know different, I would love to hear, because I will be interested as well!!

The A.sinensis coming from the farms in Anhui Province are listed as CITES II so would be legal in the US if the USFWS issued permits - which they don't do for the hobbyist. It's my understanding that they are imported into many European countries.
I can't say that I blame them considering the irresponsible behavior of so many in the pet-keeping public. There are breeding populations of spec. caimans in So. Florida. What would happen if Chinese alligators were to find their way into that area? What could happen to the gene pool over time?

Bill Moss May 16, 2005 08:11 PM

What I meant to say was what would happen to the gene pool of the American alligator over time if the Chinese alligator began cross breeding and/or competing for resources.

I do not think, that (possible?) cross-breeding would be the problem, but: You are right, Bill, many different issues should be discussed.
In the 90´s, about 70 Chinese Alligators came to Europe, legally imported from Anhui and sold very expensive.I guess, nearly 50 % of them died in the meantime. All of the imported animals went to hobbyists, so we now have more Chinese Alligators in private hands than in zoos or zoological institutions in Europe.
I,for myself, got one female 2 years ago, which was i a very poor condition and is now doing great.

thank for answering guys...

sorry to hear that... think this could be one of the best crocs to keep.... hope some day we can have this great animals available

Ralf... where did you get yours???

Ralf Sommerlad May 17, 2005 02:19 PM

I got my female from one of the guys, who purchased 3 or 4 animals soon after their arrival. It was 42 cm ( less than 1 1/2 ft)long but 7 years old when I got it in August 2003, really skinny and in poor condition. She grew to 80 cm since then - and is doing great. Hibernation is from October till March and takes place inside of the indoor enclosure, which is then moved into my cold cellar.

If you dont mind me asking Ralf, how is your indoor enclosure set up?

Ralf Sommerlad May 17, 2005 04:04 PM

Its a very simple enclosure: Plastic pool, basking area made of wooden planks, covered with peat, some stones as hiding place, a few plants.
The water is filtered and heated by a custom aquarium filter, the basking area is heated by 2 spots.
I will build a larger one in a seperate room this summer, which will be more comfortable, much larger...and I am just thinking about an outdoor enclosure also. Fortunately, Chinese Alligators can be also kept outdoors here in Germany during the summer months. .

The best enclosure I´ve ever seen can be viewed in http://members.aol.com/agkrokodile/

There is also a instruction for building - unfortunately in German.

THAT IS BAD A$$!! Im gonna do it!! That is the best indoor enclosure I have ever seen. I wonder how much (in U.S. Currency)it would cost to set one up like that.

Thanks for posting that Ralf.
