Petco Protest in Baltimore this Sunday

Katrina Jul 12, 2003 06:25 AM

Permission to cross post was granted by Ms. Griffin. She can also be reached at ChristyG@peta.org

I know a lot of people don't like PETA, but this isn't about PETA. It's about Petco and the fact that they are still selling wild-caught reptiles, including Greek and Russian tortoises. At the Petco in Timonium, they are mixing their Russian tortoises with a semi-aquatic Asian turtle - a recipe for disaster.

Dear Activist,

We urgently need your help at a local protest in pushing PETCO to stop selling animals. As you may know, PETA recently kicked off a campaign against PETCO based on the countless complaints we've received from PETCO customers and employees on the inhumane treatment of animals at PETCO stores across the country. Employees at PETCO stores are so poorly trained that baby birds have starved to death, other animals have been cannibalized by cage mates as a result of stressful, overcrowded conditions, and managers have ordered employees to throw sick and injured animals into freezers to die.

Please join us from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13 at 8640
Pulaski Hwy. We'll be providing posters and leaflets, so please just bring yourselves, your friends, family, and anyone else you can find. Please e-mail or call me as soon as possible if you can attend. Just one or two hours out of your day will make such a tremendous difference in sending the message to PETCO that the cruelty that it inflicts on animals will not be tolerated. Please check out PETCOCruelty.com to learn more about the campaign. Thank you and we hope to see you there!

For the animals,

I appluad your heart felt efforts! I do believe that Petco should get some help with it's reptile care! My local Petco has highered the past president of our local reptile club to handle their reptiles. Jeff Port has done a great job there, vast improved!
However I would strongly caution getting involved with PETA for any reason. Thier aggenda is take away your right to keep all animals as pets and kill the pet industry. Now at this point some of you are saying so what if the pet industry dies. Well here is the "What". If the pet industry dies so does all the good companiyes right along with it. That means T-rex, Zoomed, and many we all love will be gone! It takes the stores like Petco and others to keep these companies around as well.
Peta has secseeded in the bird hobby and has set it's sights on our hobby. There is no longer birds shipped on airline flights. How long before that happens to reptiles? By the way that would go for CB as well. What about the animals that are not being worked with on a grand scale in our hobby? Also that would mean no new geans for the current pool of CB speices. What a shame that would be! We would find it very difficault to get new color strains from other countries. Well I could go on and on, but I will get off of my soap box now!!!
Please be carefull with "Getting into bed with PETA"!!!!!!!!!!!
Myself I consider it sleeping with the bad guys and so do some of by pet bird breeding freind who once felt like you.

Could'nt agree more. These fanatics are a bunch of socialist antihunting freaks. They also want to shut down hunting, fishing, close down Mcdonalds and burger king and take away our pets. Its time to eat a triple cheese burger!!!

What do you say we make it a "Bambie Burger"?!
I think we need to stand up for our rights and fight for them as well!

While we are on the topic I might as well get this off my chest. I work at a pet store (and we have a very nice reptile section with healthy animals) and I hear about 20 times a day "I'm from PETA" and then they go off about whatever they choose, or call us bad names I won't repeat here and run out of the store. When I first became a vegetarian 9 years ago I "joined" PETA. For about $20 you get a year membership card and a magazine, it doesn't qualify you for much, anyone can do it. I quickly learned these people were way too extreme and that was enough for me. Anyway...one day I had a woman come into the store because she was with PETA and was afraid the rabbit that was by itself was lonely. After we pretty much settled that she then told me she wanted a pet wolf/dog hybrid, which are illegal here anyway. PETA is pretty much against keeping animals for pets, I know they are against keeping wild animals caged. Just goes to show anyone can be from PETA and still have no clue.

I couldn't agree more. Let's keep the fools out of our rank and file! Once they have charmed thier way in your done!
I spent over 10 yrs in the pet industry and I have seen alot of good stores and a lot of bad stores. The thing that always happens is the good stores get better and the bad stores don't.
So spend your money at the good stores and don't at the bad!!!
Just don't get inbed with those PETA freaks!
