New to Tegus

Rydair May 16, 2005 03:34 PM

Hello everyone this is my first post on the Tegu forum I normally hang out soakin up info over in the monitor section. Well Ive been lookin to get another lizard for a while and a Tegu is lookin pretty good. Ive just started my research so if their is any knowlege on basic care, housing, feeding and temperment that anyone could pass my way Id really appreciate it. The main question right now though is which would be better for a Tegu beginner a black and white or a blue???
Thanks for any replies!

Either one would be fine, temperment wise. Just make sure you get an Argentine B&W, not a Columbian. The Columbian will be almost guarranteed to be wild caught (no matter what the dealer says),and their temperment is suspect.

Be aware that the Argentine Black and Whites get really big. I notice that your signature say all your herps are in your bedroom. Be prepared to give up at least half of your bedroom for a cage for a grown tegu! That said, female blues are probably the smallest you could get. I think most of them max out at about 3 feet.

I also hang out on the monitor forum. In this case, I think a tegu would be a wonderful addition to your herp collection.

Good Luck and don't be afraid to ask questions on this forum!

I agree with LizardMom on all points. Any tegu such as the Argentine Red Tegu, Argentine Black & White Tegu or the Blue Tegu will have similar temperment, but the Colombian Black Tegu (or the Colombian Gold-Phased Black Tegu) is generally more flighty and timid and requires a lot more work. If this is your first tegu there are a few different places you can find helpful info.. Start with the new MSN Search & Google and search for "Tegu".

A Blue Tegu can get 3 to 3.5 feet long and the Argentine Black & White Tegu can get 4 to 4.25 feet long, so for you the Blue Tegu is probably a good choice. I'd try http://bluetegu.com, but you'll probably want to wait until July or so for the new hatchlings.

If you are interested in Blues please take a look at my website for information on their care. "Bluetegu.com" is also a great resource both as a breeder and for information as well. Welcome to "Club Tegu"!!

Thankyou both for your help. Ill be sure to check the website! And Leslie I'm lucky to have a large room and unique organizing (or craming haha)skills and I am aware of the size cage they should have when their full grown and ive got some room already while some more room will be freeing up over the summer because the turtles are going to a new home.
Thanks again for the posts! Any more are welcome!

Peace
