This comes up alot. The best explanation for the difference between a regular motley and a hurricane motley is exemplified on a meterological map. The symbol for a hurricane is a swirling circle with a concentric space inside. The inside circle represents the eye of the storm.
If these had been named donut motleys, nobody would be misidentifying them. The markings must resemble a donut to be considered a hurricane motley. Many think if you have good circles down the back of a motley, this is a hurricane. That would be true if the circles are bordered concentrically with broad margins. The two snakes you pictured here are hurricane motleys.
This picture shows a typical amelanistic hurricane motley on top. Note the concentric margins. While the bottom example is a beautiful pattern with good circles, they're not bordered concentrically. Hence, it is not a hurricane motley.
