but I believe this was a black racer. Much faster and alert. Managed to get off one shot, and he was gone. I'm thinking Southern Black Racer, but if anyone thinks Obsoleta, chime in. York River State Park, in Va.

We have blue racers here and they always hold there head up like that searching for food.Great looking pic.Nature shots are hard to get.

Yea, the lighting on top of the head, with the shaping of the skull similar to how a Savanna monitor looks (with the raised eyebrow ridge) definitely means it's a racer. A black rat snake would have a flatter head and the white chin should be visible from that angle.
Seen much else out there? I live closeby and might get out there sometime if it's got some good stuff.

That was only the second time I've been to the park. The first trip was boating/fishing. Finds for the day were the one large black rat I posted below. Also, several Racers, including the one you identified in my pic, one Ring neck snake, Fence lizards, five line skinks, and I think that was it for reptiles. Not bad for a three hour period in the middle of the day. I may hit the park again at a later time in the evening to see what I can spot. I'm only one county over from the York River, so it's good to here from another local herper.
