Brown Snake Terrarium questions

CrittersMailToo May 16, 2005 08:48 PM

Hi i was thinking on how to improve my female marsh brown's (S.d.limnetes)terrarium and i was looking at her rock, it's propped up by a piece of pumice. Its sandstone, and there's some moss growing outside a huge patch of it, and there's also pillow moss in the woods and was wondering if any of the moss would grow on the rock. I also have co-co bark and dirt mixture, so i could possibly grow the moss on it. Will she like it? She hasn't shed since i've had her, well i haven't found any. She's not eating slugs, for people who wanted observations, but the slugs help with feces. She only eats earth worms from stores. And since i put a florescent light on her she seems more active and prettier. I'd like to find a male if anyone knows where i can get one. Anyway just wanted to share my observations and ask about the moss, thanks for advice, help, etc.

Sounds GREAT to me.

The flourescent lighting does wonders. Dry hides would also be a good idea, in addition to the green moss, and moist soil. A Very large clump of field grass, tied together in the middle with a string, works great. The little snake can wedge itself in between the blades of grass and feel more secure.
Also... shingles. In all of the experience that I ave had with browns in the wild... They love shingles more than any other coverr in the whole world. Old, weathered shingles are like California seaside mansions to them. Hope this helps.

Cool, i have to ask my friend's dad for shingles. I was planning on using grass but was deciding against it, i guess i'll go out and get some. It's only a 10 gallon, so i can't add too much more. She also regurged a worm the other day, any suggestions on why?

With the shingles, just make sure that they are not cedar, and if they are pine make sure they are well weathered.

Ok, i'll keep that in mind. But no one has answered my question: Will the moss grow on the rock?

Hello,

Depending on the species, most moss will grow on stone.
