Slugs and Hypo Hogs...

JDouglas May 16, 2005 09:21 PM

Well my boa gave birth today rght on schedule, 103 days after POS. It was a slugfest.

We ended up with four perfect babies and all four are hypo.

She had 18 perfect slugs and did everything right on schedule so I think the little male we used didn't quite get the job done.

We didn't have any background on this hypo from the previous owner and since this breeding he has been sold. Now I am wondering if he was possibly a super hypo because all four babies were hypo. If he wasn't homozygous we had extremely good luck with the odds on these four boas...

I see where you would be worried you had a Super when all were Hypos.

I will tell you this, I have seen a few litters of Hypo Hoggs as well as we had one last year. What I noticed on your animals that matches mine are the dots on the back. I find that very odd. I thought our Dot was something special and it looks like more and more hypo hoggs have them. Wonder where that is coming from? Between each saddle is a DOT or maybe DOT DOT then the next saddle. I see them on yours too.

Your crosses look very clean... wait till they start shedding!! They only get better and better... just wait till you can produce Sunsets!~

After reading this post about the dots I checked the classifieds and there are quite a few salmons for sale with no mention of being a cross that have this 'dot' and my own salmon female which was bred from a salmon to normal (no hog influance) also has these dots here and there between a few saddles...
how prevelant is it in the crosses? Every single one has it? Do other people see their normal salmons with the dots as well?

(I should say... all salmons are crosses anyways since they have bc saboage right? but I mean hog crosses)

my female:

I was just noticing the dots. Maybe it is from the Hypo side and they have them too. A few of mine are growing out of the dots, or they are just starting to fade. Look at this one though at birth how dark they were.

I bet it is a by-product of the salmon gene too.
I've noticed the dots seem to have faded off my girl as well, I guess it's not that the dots are fading but rather the yellow/buckskin coming in more.

I thought you found the clue to telling the crosses apart! darn!

Hey man, that is one impressive animal. I see that one every time I close my eyes, almost like it was etched in my head...I love it....do it again.! Andy
