This past weekend I went down for Jim Harrison and Kristen’s wedding (of KY reptile zoo) and spent a GREAT 24 hours in eastern KY (Daniel Boone forest region, on Sat eve and Sun morning). Lots of finds…a total of 19 subspecies, including 10 amphibian subspecies and 9 reptiles. On Friday eve, it was raining lightly, and I went road-cruising and found lots of amphibians.

Saturday morning, I went out with the Frevola clan (Marc, Melissa and their 3 girls) and we did great!

Here’s the list of Reptiles that were found and photos of each (scroll down, there’s a lot…these are all the actual animals we found!)

Eastern Fence Lizard (1)
Eastern Box Turtle (1)
N. Water Snake (1)
Black Rat Snake (1, DOR)
Northern Copperhead (1)
Black Racer (2)
Black King Snake (2)
N. Ringneck snake (15 +, too many to count)
Dekay snake (2)

Black King snake (3 found, 2 under tin, one DOR)

This 41” male was gorgeous!
He was found under tin at about 9AM, 50 degrees

Check that belly out!

This female was found at another location, about a mile from the first. She measured 35”
She did some bizarre defense posturing…she acted “normally” at first, musking, trying to get away…then froze in these strange positions.

Dekay snake, 2 found, one in the open, one under tin

Lots of these found under cover

Black Racer (opaque) This guy measured 5’ ! He was found under tin

Black Racer, same snake as above

Back Racer #2, also under tin…this one was sharp!

Northern Water Snake (found near stream)

Eastern box turtle, female found crossing road, and showing it’s reaction to being moved to the other side of the road.
