ringneck slimed

billysbrown May 17, 2005 10:08 AM

Hello,

I've been reading this forum for a while, but this is my first post.

I have recently acquired two ringnecks - one northern and one southern. I have been trying worms with them but they have not been eating them - living quite happily with them, but not eating them.

Yesterday I tried a large redback salamander with the northern, and the snake attacked it immediately. It grabbed the salamander's tail, and the tail popped right off. In the end, the snake swallowed the tail, but its head was covered with sticky mucous and spagnum and dirt that had stuck to the mucous.

I picked off some of the debris and sprayed the snake with some water, and I think it scraped itself off pretty well after that, but I was amazed by the whole thing and wanted to see if others have seen it and get your thoughts.

Any advice on switching these guys to worms would also be greatly appreciated - much easier to come by.

Thanks,
Billy

No Northern ringneck is going to refuse a live salamander. With the southern, if it won't take worms, try rosy red minnows or guppies.

The slime is normal, happens everytime a salamander is grabbed. I think it's quite funny to watch the snake try to get the slime off, it sucks whenever the snake lives in an enclosure with newspaper or paper towels as the substrate though lol. Just spray the snake's enclosure after the feeding, and the slime will come off.

about a northenr never turning down a salamander. I have had mine (actually mississippi ringneck) for a few months now and it ate well at first. It ate sallies with no problem at all. I have had a slimy in there for abouit 3 weeks or more and it is living happily with the ringneck. Nothing has changed. I think it might be gravid, because they lose appetite usualy then.

Yeah that would be the problem. About 2-4 weeks from now, she should start to get into a shed. After that shed you'll be able to feel the eggs. She'll lay her eggs 5-10 days after the shed.
