Are you sure it is a Gulf Coast Box Turtle? I am in Tallahassee, Florida which is near the Georgia state line. I really feel this is an Eastern Box Turtle. I mean the markings on its back are quite clear and they definetly don't look they belong to a Gulf Coast Box Turtle.
See how the marginal scutes flare up at the back end? That is typical of the Gulf Coast subspecies. Also, they don't have a specific pattern that's why the shell feature is important in distinguishing between Carolina & major
What ever he is, he's beautiful. I love the patern on his shell.
That's the thing with major. They have a variable pattern and can resemble a Florida, Eastern, or 3-toed box. I just saw some pics on the internet of groups of Gulf Coast turtles all with different patterns. Some of them even have white heads.
