Bluetailed Skink?

jayess May 17, 2005 11:05 AM

Can someone tell me what kind of lizard this is. I realize this is not the best picture, but it is all I have at this time. The lizard has a blue tail and it striped. I took this picture on the side of my office building in Tallahassee, Florida which is adjacent to some woods. I need the specific species if possible and the scientific name.

I'm gonna have to go with the Southeastern Five-Lined Skink (Eumeces inexpectatus).

There are three species of skinks in Florida. How can I tell which of the 3 it is? I am in Tallahassee, Florida which is just 30 minutes from Georgia and is not your typical Florida environment. (more like south Georgia)

(1) Five-lined skink, Eumeces fasciatus
(2) Southeastern five-lined skink, Eumeces inexpectatus
(3) Broadhead skink, Eumeces laticeps

I'm thinking the Southeastern because of the size, narowness of the stripes and adults sometimes retain a blueish color on the tail. There are more than 3 species of skink native to Florida. They are as follows :

Ground Skink (Scincella lateralis)
Five-Lined Skink (Eumeces fasciatus)
Southeastern Five-Lined Skink (Eumeces inexpectatus)
Mole Skink (Eumeces egregius ssp.)
Sand Skink (Neoseps reynoldsi)
Southern Coal Skink (Eumeces anthracinus pluvialus)

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, when I said 3 skinks in Florida, I meant 3 that could be confused for the skink in my pic. They are actually 11 species of skinks in Florida that I know of.

(01) Southern coal skink, Eumeces anthracinus
(02) Florida Keys mole skink, Eumeces egregius egregius
(03) Cedar Key mole skink, Eumeces egregius insularis
(04) Bluetail mole skink, Eumeces egregius lividus
(05) Peninsula mole skink, Eumeces egregius onocrepis
(06) Northern mole skink, Eumeces egregius similus
(07) Five-lined skink, Eumeces fasciatus
(08) Southeastern five-lined skink, Eumeces inexpectatus
(09) Broadhead skink, Eumeces laticeps
(10) Sand skink, Neoseps reynoldsi
(11) Ground skink, Scincella lateralis
