PUEBLANS ready to breed?

jadrig May 17, 2005 02:46 PM

ive had two female pueblans for a couple years now, one is like 4 1/2 yrs old(around 3 ft and pretty thick) and the other is a little bit younger, shorter, and a lot slimmer. i just picked up a male thats around 2 ft but pretty slim. i introduced him to my larger female and they both started twitching right off the bat. they did a little bit of wrestlin and climbin but that was it. i seperated them and the female seemed to be lookin for him. i put them back and they didnt do to much. my female seems ready but im not sure if the male is. what size are males when they are ready to breed? what are some signs that they are both ready? how long should i leave them together?

Males can breed successfully by their second year. I don't know if your male is virile yet or not, but Pueblans can get the job done in a blink of an eye. They don't hook up for hours like some other colubrids.

I bred Pueblans years ago. I put the male in with the female, and they wrestled for about 5 minutes. I removed the male and decided that since the young female seemed more agitated than ready, I would wait until she was another year older (she was only 2.) She dropped 8 good eggs 6 weeks later.

I leave mine togather overnight for 3 or 4 nights, separating them for a couple of days between "overnight stays." For me Pueblans have always been very early breeders. I had one female lay a clutch of eggs on May 12 and another will have her eggs any day now.
