Introduction of a newly collected Egaria Multicarinata

jasonw May 17, 2005 02:52 PM

Just wanted to share this awesome picture. This was taken a minute or 2 after I introduced a new individual to the Elgaria enclosure. As you can probably tell the plumper of the 2 was the previously established individual and the skinny one is the new one. I have since introduced yet another to this same enclosure and so far so good. I have not observed one once of aggression from the 3 as of yet. In this picture you see Alli has walked up to her new cage mate and given her a nice little smell. I am fairly confident all the individuals currently in the enclosure are females but hopefully at least one of the three will produce a litter for me as they were all collected in prime breeding season.

I recently released the colony on an associates property. The enclosure was much to small for the number of individuals I maintained witch was 5 in a 10G tank. My next colony will be in a much larger “55G” enclosure. They are little pigs. I purchased 200 crickets a week and out of the 5 individuals they would eat them all.

I see you are using the Lizard Carpet there. I found that stuff to be great for Alligator Lizards too.

Yes I use the carpet for all my reptiles. I find that my Leopard Gecko gets his nails stuck on it from time to time but gets unstuck. It seems to be just about perfect for the E. Multicarinata

I like carpet for lizards that like to hide more in decorations, but for lizards that like to dig, I use sand or dirt. I had three Western Skinks a while back that loved to dig. It was really fun watching them dig tunnels. Occasionally, I would see one of their blue tails sticking out of the ground. I have a picture of it actually:

It used to make me laugh when I saw their tails "growing" out of the ground like that. If I were a bird flying around looking for worms, that blue tail would be the first thing I'd see.
