???Corn Snake vs similar snakes

dragonlovers May 17, 2005 04:10 PM

I was wondering if someone could tell me what the comparisons are with corn snakes as pets as opposed to the king or milk snakes. I am planning on getting a snake or two, and am deciding between these three. Which are tamer, easier to handle, size and care differences, etc. Thanks in advance to those who respond.

If it is your first snake(which it sounds like it is) I would definately go with a corn snake. Corns are the best example of just about any snake trait I can think of... best range of colors, best disposition, best handleability (

I don't know why but it cut off my post!!! I am too lazy to write it ALL again so I will just say...Buy the corn!

Thanks for your response. Yes, this will be my first snake. Does one sex make a better pet than the other? Is one more colorful? Are there any complications with not breeding them, such as egg binding? Thanks again.

First off let me say I agree. A corn snake is an excellent first snake.
Easy to keep, easy to handle, come in an wide variety of colors and patterns, eat well and most are inexpensive.

There really isn't a difference between male in female as pets.
I personally do not believe they need to be bred to lead a long healthy life. I also believe there is less chance of complications if they aren't bred. Just my opinion

I agree they do not need to be bred to live a long healthy life. In fact I have heard that they live a longer life and healthier life if they are not bred. As far as males vs females as pets, I wonder if females are more content to stay in thier cages in the spring time than males. Since males tend to roam in search of romance.

All snakes are different. You can get nippers and dogtame in the same clutch. Most snakes mellow out after time, some dont.Corns, rats, milk, kings, all make good first snakes. If you want a lapdog snake try a captive born ball python.
In the long run it wont matter.Once bitten by the snake bug your doomed to cleaning cages the rest of your life.LOL.
Remember all snakes are escape artists. There is nothing worse than loosing your new snake the first night you have it...Paul
