Looking for Herping Buddy In SOCAL

reiley May 17, 2005 07:06 PM

I just moved down here from Oregon so I don't really have anyone to herp with. As a result I am looking for someone. I would prefer someone who doesn't care much about actually collecting the animals, mostly looking at them and taking photos.
I road cruise, but mostly enjoy hiking and finding them in their natural habitat (under rocks, in rock cracks, etc.)during the day a about an hour after civil twilight. Hiking is where I spend most of my time.
I mostly herp for lizards, snakes, and scorpions.

I am in Palm Springs, CA
If interested, you can email me at reiley@yahoo.com

I didnt think you are, but you never know anymore. Palm Springs is the new Santa Monica Blvd. Anyways, I often am going to the desert to look for herps, but you are already there. To find animals you just need to take a short drive to isolated roads where you'll find tons of snake, before you know it everyone will be asking you "where are all the snakes."

Yeah, I guess this is kinda a gay mecca. Where I come from in Oregon is actually about the same ratio though so I am pretty used to it.
Sure, that sounds cool. I also like to hike mostly though, are you up to doing that?

Uh, doesn't anyone around here like to hike or does everyone just sit in their cars and look for snakes?

I prefer hiking over cruising, and here is why:
1. It saves gas money.
2. You can get further out of the way of where people are/go.
3. Hiking on foot gets you to cool places and is funner than sitting in a car.
4. No DOR's, well sometimes there are dead snakes, but few dead as a result of people.
5. The excitement of flipping a snake is hard to beat as compared to road cruising.

And a few good points of cruising:
1. When the weather is hot during the day and you are looking for nocturnal snakes, you can use your headlights to "see" in the dark.
2. When the weather is cool at night, snakes are often attracted to and stay on the warm asphalt for a while.
3. Under the right conditions, one can see many snakes on the road in just a few hours. (can find equal numbers during the day in the spring, under the right conditions)
4. It can be fun with a group of people.
and that is about it.
