I had a snake in my yard in Cleveland, Tennessee. The snake was black and gold. The gold was on the back in what looked like circles. From the side it looked like a puzzle piece.

The puzzle piece's make me think Garter. How big was it? Did it have keeled(rough) scales or did it look smooth and shiny?

From your description, sounds like it might be an Eastern King Snake.
