Hog Island Boa

phiber_optikx May 17, 2005 11:22 PM

I am going to the Tulsa expo on Saturday and am seriously thinking of picking up a boa. Wanting a boa that doesn't get over 10 ft, not outragios in price because it is a pet not a breeder, and has a good disposition. And that is why I am concidering a hog island boa! Anyone have any other breed suggestions? Also pix would be much appreciated. Thanks! Also, say the boa only gets 5-6' would a 55 gallon be ok or would I need something else? getting a custom cage is no problem....just wanna know what I will need to prepare for.

A hogg island or a colombian common boa male would make a good choice. Both should be fine in a 55 gallon tank or a 4 ft+ custom cage. Male colombians go for around 100.00 a hogg is usally a little more 150.00 to 200.00.
Good luck

Well I am wanting to know which is best... Because I am new to boas NOT SNAKES how big does a male columbian boa get on average? I was under the impresion that they got 8-9'.... I love boas and am prepared to own and take care of one, but it would be a lot easier for me to take care of something 6-7' than a monster 14' snake. So I definately plan on going male. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am going to the Tulsa expo which is where I plan to buy it. I am looking for one of the grey redtails as compared to one of the darker browns. Are they the same species with different coloration or does the grey tell you something? I have seen the greys at the local pet shop and they say it is a columbian redtail. But they also told me that a snow corn is the same as an albino corn... so lets not trust them anymore! Thanks again for all of your help!

Will bring you up to speed on this BCI form.Show prices on these are often to high on opening day,its best to try and hit a show on the last day for better deals on "pet quality". But also beware of the tables with hypo`s and morphs as some will unload Hog's of questionable breeding.Check around for some references on breeders in the Tulsa area, there are some in that area that could scare a crack dealer:-
