Mud and musk turtles would do fine in a thirty gallon tank. In fact (depending of course on how many you want to have) a 30 gallon would work even as an adult. They only get to be 4-5'' in length.

If you decide to go with a turtle that grows larger, a thirty gallon will still get you by when they are juveniles. Eventually you would have to upgrade.

Is it a 30 long? Muds like shallow water. A male eastern, midland, or southern painted might be OK.

A 30 gallon tank is not large enough for ANY species of turtle to spend its adult life.

Mud turtles need more room than most species as they spend time on land and in water.

A 30 might be okay for a hathcling for a year or so.
But noi adult turtle should be kept in such a tiny enclosure.

Please don't imprision a sensitive animal is 2 square feet of space.

A hatchling would get lost in a 30 gal tank. Hatchlings are best kept in small containers until they are eating regularly and then put in a slightly larger container. I've kept mud and musks in 20 gal and they have done fine. You just have to clean it out more often.
