Had a 3 rosy night in the Santa Rosas last saturday

jeph May 18, 2005 12:15 PM

On 5-14-05, I headed out to the Santa Rosa Mtns., I got there around 6:45 and hiked till 7:30 or so.I'm glad i did too, cause i came across my first rosys while hiking. The first one was this huge female.I was walking along a wash bed-(even had soem water in it still) and this girl was crossing the dirt, she was close to 4ft,the biggest rosy I've seen.Last memorial day I saw 4 rosys here, fun times.

A pic that shows her pattern and color a bit better.I was so excited when I first saw her all stretched out crossing the wash bed, just like when you see them road cruising, but its so much better when your out hiking and see it, for me anyways.

This guy was also found while hiking. Not too long after the female was seen, and not too far from the same area. This guy had a cool color, real blue.He was on the prowl through the rocks-(although I moved him to this rock for the picture),

This male was big too,not quite as large as the big female, but still a good size.I liked his colors,he had more of a faded pattern that the first 2.He was found road cruising, only 15 minutes after beeing back in the car from the hike, I love it when its snake after snake, and all rosys-thats why even after the nights of no snakes for 6 hours,I'm back for more, lol. The only other snakes that night were long-nosed snakes.

Hey Ryan,
Yeah, there are nights when I've drove for up to 6hrs,and no snakes at all, nothing, but having nights like that help out,it wouldnt be as fun if they were everywhere all the time. But thsi time of year, its just knowing when and where to go,and they will be there. To bad you wernt able to make it that night, peace,

Jeph, WOW! Those are some nice boas, the size is most impressive. I enjoy herp hiking too but am more hesitant to go alone now days and it is hard to get schedules to match to go with anyone. Nice finds though and great pics!
