do you mean those big ol outdoor halogen lights? if that IS what you mean yes i use one in chloe and z's cage. well actually i bought a fixture with a ceramic base and then hung the light over the cage. i have a 100 gallon aquarium with a big screen top. it hangs about 15 inches from the top and then i have a branch at an angle in the cage where they can get anywhere from 24 to 30 inches away from the light cause it does get HOT. but they love it and it keeps the cage a good temp....now with the weather changing and summer approaching i'm going to switch back to a 100 watt bulb because that would just be too much for them. they are in my front room in my house and that room gets no air conditioning (unless i open the door to it if they get too hot). i hope this big ramblefest has answered your question...hahaha

i'm actually thinking of a mounted halogen spotlight I saw at Lowe's. it would be mounted on the ceiling of a melamine cage (4x2x2).

I use halogen bulbs to save power. They do put off much more heat than incandescants of a similar wattage, but if you just use a smaller wattage, (I use 50w indoor/outdoor flood, NOT spot, from Home Depo, and it gets the cage as hot as a 100w incandescant) then you save big money on the energy bill! I use just a normal ceramic "clamp lamp" fixture. How far is the bulb from the basking site? (This will help determine the wattage you need to get between the necessary 100*-105*F)

i need to measure it. it will be mounted to the top of a cage 22" tall so with the fixture and the metal box i'm not sure but i'll measure it as soon as i know how deep the box is

Thanks for the help

anything else that gets too hot because of it, and (2) you don't exceed the capacity of the surrounding materials to absorb heat. IOW, you don't melt the fixture, burn melamine, etc., etc.

Those things DO get really hot...hot enough to heat metal that's close by to the point that it will burn you.

is reduced it probably gets too hot for itself.
