I would take this with a grain of salt.
we all know drug addicts are very credible and honest don't we.
You must also question the writers of this piece of work.
The fda would shut down all venomous keepers if this was true.
one more nail in the coffin!
'Budman';
Um ... I have no expertise in this particular hot area, but if I may ...
I would not expect an 'immediate response to ban hots' based on this item ... it was printed in 1990 ... and to the best of my modest knowledge and knowledge of herp-related press coverage, I have not seen any intiatives to ban hots due to potential drug dependancies! (smiley here).
2nd, this was published in a journal in India. Now while they do excellent (albeit sometimes 'different') work there with venoms and herps (and maybe drugs ... again, not my area of expertise), their research is not often picked up by the West in any significant way.
I posted the item strictly as a 'discussion topic' ... I don't ensorse it (please insert 'expertise' comment here again) nor am I sure just how much credibility it has in either the herp, venom or medical communities.
From time to time, with your group - the croc crowd and the python people, I'll find something printed that looks to me to be the equivilant of opening a small room, throwing in a rock and shouting "grenade!".
It's how I learn (after I regain consciousness after the beating)
respectfully,
Wes
Sorry if it might have looked that way.
It was very interesting to say the least.
again nothing pointed at wes

... trying to bring your attention to the 'date' of the item ... just in case you went to the 'guts' of the item first. But thanks for the gesture.
I tried a quick search on some english-language search engines in India for more on this ... so far, just variations on a theme so far. I'll try some German sources next since the item did refer to a German article. Unfortunatly, while I have enough German to 'fins' what I'm looking for, I'll be unable to translate the hot-specific scientific language that this sort of article is written in.
As usual and as you guys(*) already do, I'll post the URLs for anything found.
*Ummm ... just for interest ... are there and ladies that frequent the venom forum? Just nosy.
Cheers
Wes
and I'm a lady I think. I was last time I checked *L* But I don't have any hots right now and probably won't for a long time to come. I lurk here because I'm interested in hots. Very interested but not stupid enough to get one without knowing what I'm doing and with enough experience behind me to deal with situations that might arise.

(I'm 40 Y/o now) I had a science teacher who was always full of interesting tidbits of info and a fun guy to learn from. He always ended his class with a True/False "Believe it or Not" type science question. One of those questions was about the abuse of snake venom by impoverished Indians for its narcotic effects.
At the time it seemed seriously crazy. Now that I've seen the extent that people will go for a "high", it doesn't seem extreme at all.
Just an observation,
Doug T
Doug Taylor Reptiles
Do you remember if he was referring to American Indians or Asian Indians? I actually did a talk a year ago where one of my thesis' was that some of the snake worship in the Levant arose out of envenomation experiences and the entheogenic effects some might produce... I would be interested to know any further tidbits anyone might have on this topic.
